Instructional Designer, Office of Distance Education, University of Nevada, Las Vegas 89154. 11/2006 – 09/2009

Responsible for assisting faculty in the College of Education and the Schools of Social Work and Journalism and Media Studies and the English Department with the design and development of their online courses, presented in WebCT – Vista 4/Blackboard. Trained and mentored faculty members new to distance education, and those redesigning or redeveloping courses in online course design, development, and course facilitation.

Served as estate manager for UNLV Exploratoria, a Second Life Island (a virtual 3-D environment) owned by the Office of Distance Education. Terraformed and landscaped the Island; contracted for and placed custom-designed buildings. Hosted classes for students from other universities. Consulted with faculty planning courses and developing grants for presentation in “Second Life”.

Instructional Designer/Faculty Development Specialist, Center for Distance Education, School for New Learning, DePaul University, Chicago, IL, Loop Campus. 01/2003-09/2006

Responsible for assisting course authors (some new to online course design) in the design and development of interdisciplinary courses for online delivery, using an established competence-based model. Courses were designed using an adult learning based model and templates that I developed. Oriented new adjunct faculty to the Center for Distance Education’s policies and procedures, and served as their primary point of contact. Designed and developed electronically distributed paper-based study guides. Trained, and provided mentoring and support for visiting and resident faculty in the effective use of interactive discussion for online learning. Consulted with faculty in the development of other web-based course materials, using PowerPoint, DreamWeaver and Camtasia. Designed and developed student and faculty handbooks and courseware documentation. Consulted with faculty on the redesign of classroom courses for blended delivery using BlackBoard and Akiva’s WebBoard. Conducted in-person and online training workshops.

Online Faculty Development Specialist, Online Learning, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. 10/2000-10/2002

Responsible for assisting new adjunct (some new to teaching) and full-time faculty members prepare to teach online courses. Trained faculty in online course design, teaching methods, assessment, and discussion techniques. Provided ongoing mentoring and support. Trained, in person and online, and supported faculty in the use of myCourses (powered by Prometheus) and FirstClass learning management systems. Designed, developed, and applied a course/unit instructional design model based on performance outcomes, as required by Middle States Accreditation Association. Developed and presented external workshops on course-design and internally to international deaf educators, hosted by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Instructional Designer, Center for Learning Technologies (CLT), Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA. 07/1999-10/2000

Responsible for assisting faculty in the design of classroom-based, televised and online courses, and the development of instructional strategies and course materials. With Center for Learning Technologies personnel, provided faculty development in effective teaching strategies and the adaptation of teaching strategies to multiple-media environments. Provided assistance, guidance and support to faculty preparing pre-recorded segments for television and web-accessible video-clips. Trained faculty in the design and development of course web sites using LotusNotes, the use of discussion databases and other asynchronous learning materials.

Research Associate and Adjunct Professor, Northern Arizona University (NAU), Flagstaff, AZ 08/1996 to 06/1999

Initiated, developed, and implemented the NAU Virtual Conference Center (VCC) for web-based and web-enhanced teaching and learning. Consulted with faculty regarding translating teaching methods and instructional activities from classroom to the online environment. Evaluated courses and programs for faculty and administration. Designed, developed, and implemented workshops demonstrating the capabilities of the Virtual Conferencing Center. Researched, designed, developed, and disseminated materials and documentation such as job aids, FAQs, and helpful hints regarding the technical, social, pedagogical, and administrative aspects of online teaching and learning to faculty and students.

Collaborated with NAU TV Services and Web-cast Course Services to ensure integration of the VCC with other campus course delivery systems.

Designed, developed, and delivered workshops for faculty and students, delivered in the classroom and on television, in the use of the Virtual Conference Center.

Initiated (1997) and served as Conference and Program Chair for the NAU/web conferences (1997-1999) – the first US conference specifically highlighting use of the World Wide Web in Education. This annual conference attracted an international slate of presenters and attendees and served as a major faculty development event at NAU. Determined annual conference theme. Provided leadership to logistical support team. Designed and implemented an online conference to run in conjunction with the Flagstaff, AZ conference.

Teaching Assistant, The Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA 1994-1996

At The Pennsylvania State University assisted faculty with Internet enhancement of multi-national courses delivered primarily by audio-conferencing. Designed first course-affiliated web-pages for Fall, 1994.

Faculty Development Center Manager, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV 1990-1992

Dr. Maurice (Mitch) Mitchell chose me to be the first manager of the Faculty Development Center (FDC) for the University of Nevada System Computing Services, Las Vegas. Organized and conducted workshops to acquaint faculty with the University of Nevada System Computing Services, Internet access and use, electronic mail, mainframe access and programs, and general computer software productivity packages. Provided individual consulting and assistance to faculty members implementing technology use in their classrooms.

ADMINISTRATIVE and MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

Estate Manager: UNLV Exploratoria, Second Life (see http://www.secondlife.com)

Served on planning group for the use of Second Life (an emerging social virtual world) for international cooperative work group between the College of Journalism and Media Studies at UNLV and their Israeli counterparts. Took delivery of a Second Life Island in its raw state.  Terra-formed the Island to the appearance of Southern Nevada desert, installed buildings and created a variety of open teaching spaces.  Negotiated with builder for customized 80 seat teaching theatre. Served as first Estate Manager.

Wrote interim usage report for Director of the Office of Distance Education.

Served as Second Life consultant to Oakton Community College, McWeadon Education USA, and the UNLV School of Nursing.

Northern Arizona University, Virtual Conferencing Center

Architect, designer and developer of the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Virtual Conferencing Center (VCC). Determined selection criteria, selected software, coordinated software installation and pilot trials with Instruction Technology Services. Ensured prompt technical support from vendors and Instructional Technology Services (ITS). Recruited and trained pilot faculty and monitored the six pilot courses taught by five faculty members (Fall 1997) to approximately 200 students. Customized conferencing software based on student feedback to reduce input errors and student frustration. Developed alternate course structures suitable for course and group work based on faculty requirements. Prepared student and faculty documentation; maintained a nationally recognized web site with multiple resources for faculty who teach online. (http:/www.emoderators.com/moderators.html) Assisted in transition of software from departmental to university server. Negotiated favorable license contract with software vendor.

Raised consciousness of the VCC by presenting workshops at various campus venues. Performed routine site manager functions (creating, archiving and deleting conferences, changing passwords, etc.) Trained conference organizers and other site managers across the state. Trained additional faculty support personnel. Provided training for Instructional Technology Services personnel who had primary student support responsibilities.

Provided evaluation and feedback to software developer based on administration of the then largest CAUCUS academic site license in the nation.

Spring 1998, in its 4th full semester, the VCC hosted more than 200 current course-related conferences, taught by approximately 70 faculty and including more than 2000 students. The VCC also hosted various administrative conferences for NAU groups (Human Resources, The Dean’s Council etc.) and national organizations (The National Writing Project). Served on the steering committee for an online statewide conference, sponsored by the Arizona Faculties Council.

Provided support for Western Governors University by organizing and supporting communication facilities (an electronic mailing list and a virtual conference online facility) in the early stages of their organization. Represented NAU to Western Governors University. NAU was chosen as a pilot education provider in the WGU. Trained conference organizers and assisted with various support and maintenance functions.

As Volunteer Director for AFAN (Aid for AIDS of Nevada), (1987-1988) served on the volunteer training and education team; designed and oversaw input into both volunteer and client databases and served as liaison with other social agencies. (1988-1992) Provided counseling and social support as an AIDs Buddy and attended too many memorial services.

As assistant to the Regional Director of Volunteers, Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (1984-1987), coordinated or conducted all activities necessary to recruit, screen, train, place and supervise approximately 250 volunteers who donated over 23,000 work hours annually. Prepared reports and budget justifications, job descriptions and work performance standards and established a computerized record keeping system.

As Assistant Director of Public Relations, Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas (1981-1983) was responsible for the interface between the showroom entertainers, the hotel, and the local media. Developed press releases and media packets. Generated advertising copy and monitored the outside advertising agency; supervised the in-house print-shop and set up and monitored in-house systems for cooperative advertising promotions.

EDITORIAL EXPERIENCE

Co-editor of two book series for Hampton Press: Computer Mediated Communication and the Online Classroom and Wired Together: The Online Classroom in K-12 . Managing Editor of the Interpersonal Computing and Technology Electronic Journal. Editor of DEOSNEWS, a monthly journal sponsored by the American Center for the Study of Distance Education at The Pennsylvania State University. Editorial board member of APEX-J, Current Issues in Education, The ALN Journal, and other electronic journals. Moderated various computer conferences and online seminars. Edited professional papers and books in various disciplines including Education, Distance Education, Instructional Systems, computer-mediated communication, Communications, Public Relations, Recreation Management, Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice.

RESEARCH AND DATA MANAGEMENT

Developed web-based course process evaluations. Facilitated data interpretation for faculty and administration. Performed statistical analysis and wrote reports for various academic and consumer research projects. Consulted on the development of the data management phase of grant requests; on the preparation of data gathering (survey) instruments; and SPSS statistical procedures. Have written or supervised the writing of questionnaires and code books. Taught database owners to write, run, and interpret SPSS procedures. Assisted in the preparation, writing, and editing of research reports.

Have done field observation, library and legal research, and conducted computer-based database searches.

Sheaffer, researched viewer characteristics and preferences; prepared copy for, edited, and produced the bi-monthly AEBC newsletter; designed, assembled and maintained a database of all schools in the WPSX broadcast area, and a mailing list of all AEBC members, directors and designates; performed data analysis for a formative evaluation of teacher needs and preferences; and provided informational services and training to AEBC member.

The Uses of Instructional Technology in Higher Education–a research study conducted by the Center for the Study of Higher Education and the American Center for the Study of Distance Education, funded by a Corporation for Public Broadcasting Grant. Under the supervision of Dr. Peter Cookson, performed preliminary background research on the use of instructional technology in higher education; compiled and maintained a database of survey subjects, and assisted in the writing of survey instruments.

Caminar/Nevada is a 12 bed, 24 hour psychosocial rehabilitation facility for the chronically mentally ill, under contract to Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services. House counselors provided all counseling and client supervision, including training in daily living skills, social and leisure skills, individual, group and family counseling, and training on the local geography, transportation, etc.
